UK crowdfunding raises £3m for clean energy projects

UK crowdfunding raises £3m for clean energy projects

Crowdfunding is providing the financial impetus needed to lift renewable energy projects off the ground, as an investment company raises £700,000 in a month, according to Responding to Climate Change. Abundance Generation, a finance crowdfunding platform, is encouraging ordinary people to invest small amounts to fund renewable energy products across the UK. Since the project launched last summer, it has raised a total of £3m. A further £7m of new projects are planned for launch through the rest of 2013. The achievement comes after a recent report, commissioned by the Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change, showed that climate change was becoming a material consideration for…

Slingatron: US company tries to crowdfund giant space slingshot

Slingatron: US company tries to crowdfund giant space slingshot

File this Kickstarter project under “that’s so crazy, it… almost certainly won’t work”. A US company wants to herald a new era of space exploration by flinging things into space with a giant slingshot called the “Slingatron”. HyperV Technologies Corp calls it a “railroad to space” and is trying to crowdfund $250,000 (£165,000) for the project. Put simply, the Slingatron would hypothetically involve accelerating payloads around and around in an ever increasing-diameter circle until the payload was travelling fast enough to escape the Earth’s gravitational pull and fly into space. On Earth, that speed is 11km per second, or around Mach 30 (30 times the speed of…

Of all the ordinary things we can now link up to our smartphones and tablets–watches, scales, cars and even those dumb slabs that serve as our front doors–the humble kitchen thermometer doesn’t seem like an especially exciting candidate. But imagine being able to pore over graphs of botched loaves when trying to perfect the elusive art of at-home bread baking. Or being able to keep an eye on the temperature of a bird in the oven while running to the store to grab some forgotten supply. Or even just being able to monitor its temperature without opening the oven in the first place. That’s the appeal…

The Kickstarter Of Solar Gets Ambitious With Military Housing Installation

Mosaic has done a pretty good job of introducing the concept of crowdfunding to solar. By giving anybody the power to invest in solar projects around the United States for as little as $25, Mosaic has become a darling of the cleantech community. So far, the Oakland-based startup has successfully funded $2 million towards 16 solar installations from normal people investing. But most have been pretty small: the biggest project to date has been a 657 kilowatt installation on a charter school in Colorado. But now, it looks like the crowdfunding vehicle is getting a lot more ambitious. A recent project listed on the company’s website…
