Crowdfunding the Crowdfunders

Jonathan May, CEO, shares Hubbub’s reasons for crowdfunding In case you haven’t realised, Hubbub is crowdfunding. Today sees the launch of our 3 week campaign to crowdfund our own investment. Hubbub builds fundraising communities. We connect projects to people and empower organisations to develop and strengthen the relationships they have within their communities and supporters. Our core product is a crowdfunding platform that can be branded and operated by schools, colleges, universities and non-profits – bringing the engagement and interactivity of Kickstarter or IndieGoGo to sectors where fundraising and communities really matter. And now it is our turn. We’ve built a great product and an even better…

Crowdsourcing to fund studies

Crowdsourcing to fund studies

Credit Chris Parr, TimeHE, 7 August 2014 The story of a University of Oxford graduate who has crowdfunded her way to a master’s at the institution’s Wadham College has certainly divided opinion in the past few weeks. Emily-Rose Eastop, an “aspiring scientist, singer and hula-hoop dancer”, had been accepted to do the one-year course in cognitive and evolutionary anthropology but said she did not have enough money to meet the £11,250 in tuition fees, £2,765 in college fees and £11,343 living expenses she estimated she would need. Burger Theory has parodied Toni Collette’s Commonwealth Bank ad in its latest crowdfunding campaign

BURGER Theory has launched a comedic broadside at the banking industry, after being turned down for finance for their new East End venture. The company has mocked Toni Collette’s recent Commonwealth Bank advertisement, in which she recites a poem about the evils of the word “can’t”. Salesman and friend to Burger Theory Jack Adams-Williams stars in the ad, which points out that the banking industry is actually sometimes more about “can’t than ”can”. Burger Theory owner Rob Dean said the ad was “a bit of fun” to help direct people to their crowdfunding campaign on Pozible to get the new shop up and running. But it…

How crowdfunding drives development

How crowdfunding drives development

Crowdfunding is enabling more aid organisations, charities and civic projects to bypass traditional fundraising techniques In August, two Norwegian students raised $32,000 (£20,000) on the crowdfunding platform Indiegogo to fund life-saving surgery for Roona, an 18-month-old girl from Tripura, India. She had been diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a condition which causes swelling of the brain. Roona is now in recovery, but the campaign to save her is an example of how crowdfunding is being used by individuals and organisations to bring about positive change in the developing world. Similarly, Radar, a British citizen journalism organisation, is using the same platform to raise £11,500 to improve reporter security.…

Crowdfunding Brazilians seek to finance Independent Reporters

Publica, a non-profit investigative reporting and journalism agency in Brazil, has launched its first crowdfunding project. Publica will distribute ten grants of 6 thousand reais (2,500 US dollars) for investigative projects chosen by the public. The competition’s purpose is to expand the grants given to independent reporters and at the same time increase participation of the public, which will participate as an editorial board formed by those who contribute with crowdfunding. According to Natalia Viana, director of Publica, it is a journalist’s dream: O trabalho vai no sentido inverso dos portais de notícia convencionais: eles negam a informação para o público liberando-a apenas para quem pagar…
